I got the same approach using the same email. Below is what he sent me! This is very recent just now!

Hi Elvie,

I am glad to hear from you, how are you today? I got your email from LinkedIn.

I know you probably may be wondering why I contacted you out of the blue but I did state in my last email that I'd like to know you. Like the saying goes "There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven't yet met" and I hope you will give me a fair chance to be a friend to you.

I am not actually looking for any business opportunity. I stumbled on your profile and couldn't help not connecting you. LinkedIn, as we all know, is a professional website but sometimes in life, we must cross our boundaries to explore in a positive way and not to harm anyone. I'm willing to tell you about myself so you can know me but I just do not want you to be upset about my manner of approach. If you are not upset I'll be very happy but if you are, I will not bother you and will completely respect your opinion.

By the way, I am Lieutenant Colonel Roberto Vitiello, of the Us Army, I will tell you more about myself when I get your response and it's nice to meet you.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Roberto.

  2. There is another scammer out there going by lieutenant colonel Roberto Lucas Vitiello and impersonating Stephen Murphy. He is claiming to be in Kabul Afghanistan on a resolute mission since 2014. He is a widower from Houston Texas with a 19 year old son also in the army but stationed in South Korea.

  3. That Roberto Vitiello that someone on here is also on LinkedIn with several fake profiles. Messaged me yesterday wanting to ‘make friends’. Posing as a US Army Officer. Seriously?!? What’s worrying is that my work IT security quarantined a dangerous email makes as scam shortly after I responded asking what industry they were in since it’s a professional network. Is there anything that can be done about this? Impersonating military can’t be good.

    1. Why do you think we are here ! And have been for YEARS.. impersonating military is not good.. we know this and the men used know this. BUT no, at the moment nothing is being done.
We work to change hearts and minds. Sadly that is all we can do and we will keep being here until changes are made and they have to come from the top. I hope they happen

    1. Hello, I got the same Roberto Vitiello from LinkedIn, wants to be a friend, even sent me photos of himself, so I Googled this name and title only to find NOTHING that matched. Honestly via LinkedIn are not safe any where. The profile on linkedIn is empty, and there's a few of them as well... People be careful.

    2. Linkedin has always had a problem ! They don't seem to do much when reported to them but yes. it is bad there ! But it is bad everywhere

    5. Hi everybody! I'm from Uruguay and I got the exact same e-mail from this Roberto Vitiello. He said he got my e-mail address from LinkedIn and wanted to be friends with me. Then he wrote a long e-mail telling a whole story about him and he sent me two pictures of himself. I suspected it was a scam because why on earth would a US Officer want to become friends with a stranger from Uruguay?! Also, I couldn't find him on Google or on LinkedIn. My e-mail address is only available for my direct contacts on LinkedIn so I don't know how he got it in the first place. Then I found his name here. Fortunately I didn't get to share any personal info with him. Thank you for this website! I'm sure it has prevented many people from being scammed!

    6. Thank you so much for that. It means a lot when people search and find.
Thank you for the kind words

    9. Anyone that contacts you and claims military is fake.
They are never allowed to tell you where they are deployed.
They are not allowed to do it, they do not do it.
ALL are criminals, thieves from West Africa using stolen pictures of MIlitary Personnel.
Also ALL Doctors are fake, the United Nations does not put Doctors in wars.

    10. Robert has been busy! I got the same message on March 18, 2020. He found my work email off of linkedin. Wrote a long message with some odd word choices and sentence structure and sent pictures. I figured it was just some jerk using Linkedin like Tinder.

  6. I have received the same email from Roberto. I was very suspicious at the beginning. He sounded truly genuine. His English was perfect. And after a few convincing emails, I started telling him about myself. No private information. Just a general conversation about being a mother, loving to cook....I did send him pics of me that were already on Facebook. Should I be worried?

    1. Yes.. they don't get them for nothing. General chat.. your life, your birthday, your age.. where you live... all helps him know you and work on identity theft.
Pictures will be used in future scams. They do not get them for nothing !
Never answer emails... and never tell a stranger anything. It is NEVER innocent.

  12. Rob is a very smooth operator. He will tell you he is widowed with a 14 year old daughter in boarding school. Born in Italy. Only child and immigrated to the USA with his American born mother as a child. No siblings. Both parents died.... mom of lung cancer, dad of dementia. Has been in Afghanistan for almost 2 years. Cannot phone you orvideo chat because of security concerns on base. He tried to get money from me, claiming he accidentally hit a 14 year old child with a Jeep while racing back to the base. Took her to a private hospital and needs to pay for her care.... but his account is blocked. Sent me a picture of the child....except it was one of a 4 year old with a broken arm and not back injuries. I messed with his head for about 5 months until he suddenly stopped communicating. Prefers email or Hangouts as a way to communicate. Claims he does not have a phone. His communications will match up to the time zone difference.

Sorry you feel you had to keep talking to scammers for FIVE MONTHS.. what good scamming practice he had in that time. He would have learned a lot from you.. free scammer tuition, priceless.

Sorry but we try to get scammers to have nobody to speak and 'mess with his head'... no you played with scammer for 5 months.
You say he is a smooth operator, victims come to us and say 'he was really good'', WELL HOW DO YOU THINK THEY GET GOOD.. ??
Practice.. plenty of practice with women refusing not to speak to scammers.
      REALLY WHY DO WE BOTHER?>
