MILITARY ROMANCE SCAMS: THE FAKE COMMANDER, DOCTOR & MILITARY PERSONNEL
Have you ever wondered why a romance scammer introduces a supposed military commander, doctor, commanding officer, or another military official into the conversation?
It’s another layer of the deception!
Scammers use these fake characters for several reasons:
1. TO MAKE THE STORY BELIEVABLE
They pretend these officials can confirm the soldier’s identity, military assignment, or personal circumstances.
2. TO CREATE FALSE AUTHORITY
A fake commander or superior officer may claim that leave, travel, or homecoming arrangements require special permission or payment.
3. TO DEMAND MONEY
The supposed official may request money for leave papers, clearance, travel arrangements, medical emergencies, communication access, or other fabricated expenses.
4. TO REINFORCE THE LIE
When someone other than the romantic partner repeats the same story, the victim may believe it has been independently verified.
5. TO BUILD TRUST AND CONTROL
The scammer uses these additional characters to make the victim feel that an entire military organization is involved in helping their loved one.
HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND:
These people may not exist at all. They could be additional fake profiles operated by the same scammer or accomplices working together.
The military does NOT require romantic partners to pay for a service member’s leave, homecoming, permission to communicate, or release from military duties.
A uniform, military title, official-sounding email, document, or convincing conversation does not prove someone’s identity.
STOP. THINK. VERIFY.
Never send money to someone claiming to be a military official on behalf of an online romantic partner.
Don’t let an entire cast of fake characters convince you that a fictional relationship is real.
